Raiders again triumph by 1 run in top two clash!

Saturday saw our own ladder leading Raiders A Grade take on second placed Falcons and, just like the first time the two teams met, it was a high standard clash worthy of a finals contest. Raiders prevailed 5-4.

We took to the diamond in 38 degree heat with Emma Boldeman getting the start and sitting the Falcons team down in the top of the first at the start of what was to be a 6-inning gem. Emma pitched 6 shutout innings, with no runs on 5 scattered hits. In trying conditions, Emma gave up 3 earned runs in the top of the seventh and was ably relieved by Kirsty Allen who got the final 3 outs and the “Save” after inheriting bases loaded with none out.

Our settled outfield defense was very good with left fielder Ellen Sanchez making two sparkling running catches, the second resulting in a 7-6-3 double play and snuffing out a Falcons rally in the 6th. Ellen and Racquel (at Centre) are making it extremely difficult for opposition hitters to find any gaps. Our infield strength and versatility was in full display on the right side from Tiarne and Ruth who both had good defensive games, typified when they combined to turn a sharp double play in the 3rd inning when Tiarne stabbed at a sharply hit line drive and doubled the runner off first.

Offensively we showed the full breadth and depth of our game with some powerful hitting and a faultless short game which was required given the quality pitching by both teams on the day. Racquel Bisinella-Duns led the way with 3 hits, with Lauren Daykin 2 hits and Ellen Sanchez an amazing 3 Sacrifice Bunts. Racquel led off the game the 1st inning with a scorching single to Left which set the table for the first of three Ellen Sanchez SAC bunts, followed by a Lauren Daykin walk. Ruth then stepped up with a two-out, 2 RBI double to left centre get us on the board and we were then never headed.

In such a high-standard game it was very pleasing to come away with a win in such trying conditions.

HITS: Bisinella-Duns 3 (double), Daykin 2, Addlem 1 (double)
